On the side of the fourth Faecal Sludge Management Conference in Chennai this week, Praveen Prakash, Joint Secretary in the Union Urban Development Ministry, announced that a draft of National Urban Faecal Sludge and Septage Management Policy will be implemented first week of March. As part of the policy, there will be financial assistance from the Center for sewage treatment plants to distribute the compost to the nearby farmers. Further, power stations in the vicinity of the treatment plants are mandated to buy treated water from them.

EAI has previously worked in faecal waste management for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. We provided complete support to the team from Seattle to undertake a comprehensive review of the technologies available, and the exploration into logistical and revenue models for sustainable conversion of fecal waste (human waste that does not reach the sewers) into energy.
