We are all familiar with Li-ion batteries.
Also familiar with the fact that Li-ion batteries, like most batteries, have low specific energy density. While the energy density for Li-ion battery is much higher than that for Lead Acid batteries (200 Wh/Kg vs. 40 Wh/Kg), it is much, much lower than the auto fuel we all use – Gasoline – which has about 12,500 Wh/Kg!
This low energy density of batteries is also the reason for the high weight of batteries for the car to go long distances, compared to the weight of petrol that we have to use to travel similar distances.
It is in this context of battery energy density that Li-air batteries assume significance. Because, these batteries can theoretically have energy densities up to 10,000 Wh/Kg (up to 1500 Wh/Kg has been demonstrated in lab).
Tempting, are the Li-air batteries, aren’t they!
At the point in time (2019) however, these are still in research stage, with significant technological challenges facing more stable products, leave alone commercialization.
Whether Li-air batteries will come to pass, it is difficult to comment right now, but it will sure be good to have some EV batteries that have 4-5 times the amount of energy density that the Li-ion batteries currently have.
