The funding deadline for the first batch of solar projects under the Indian solar mission has now passed. pv magazine has now learned that the projects which didn’t achieve financial closure will be cancelled. India's decision to scrap its feed-in-tariff policy last August, due to an overwhelming number of applications, has been criticized. Image: MNRE. Furthermore, a spokesperson at NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd. (NVVN) told Mercom Capital Group that the capacity for the next batch of projects will be increased based on the size of the cancelled projects. For example, if 50 MW worth of projects get cancelled then the next batch capacity will be 300 MW plus 50 MW. No consequence According to NVVN, the project developers that could not get their projects financed will still be allowed to bid again and will not face any consequences. Inexperienced developers can continue to delay and hold up projects though, unless the policy is changed to include stringent qualification requirements. MNRE recently held a meeting to review policy suggestions from the industry. Based on the results of this meeting, new policy guidelines will be announced in the last week of July and will incorporate some of these suggestions. Indian solar market gambles on its reverse auction The funding deadline for the first batch of solar projects under the Indian solar mission has now passed. While the final project numbers have not been released, it appears that roughly half failed to secure funds. Here, Mercom Capital Group discusses the mission’s progress to date. By the end of the second quarter of 2011, the whole of India’s solar sector was anxiously awaiting the looming July 9 deadline - the point when developers should have secured their funding for the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission’s (JNNSMs) Phase 1, Batch 1 solar projects. This date gained even more significance after the Secretary of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) publicly stated that projects which did not…

Let companies engaged in coal mining for captive use earmark an amount equal to a fraction of the royalty they pay the states for the benefit of affected communities in the mining areas, instead of 26% of post-tax profits as suggested earlier, the coal ministry has said. It is practically difficult to separate the profits from captive coal mining for steel, cement and power companies, the ministry told the finance ministry. The Mines and Minerals Development Regulation Bill which included the provisions for mobilising resources from mining firms for local area development and for the welfare of the population affected by mining, was tabled in Parliament on Monday

India and Pakistan are the only two countries starting construction of a nuclear power plant in 2011, even as plants are being shut down in many countries and nuclear power generation has declined. It may be a little too early to predict the long-term decline of nuclear energy; but analysis indicates that countries are turning to other energy sources as a result of high costs, low demand and perceived risks from recent disasters.Despite reaching record levels in 2010, global installed nuclear capacity - the potential power generation from all existing plants - declined to 366.5 gigawatts (GW) in 2011, from 375.5 GW at the end of 2010.

India is one of a handful of countries using a novel approach to cut the cost of solar energy without subsidies - the lowest bidder gets the right to supply solar electricity. In India, those that bid the lowest in a reverse auction win the right to build solar plants up to 20 megawatts (MW) and sell the electricity under a 25 year contract. Winners are required to buy solar cells domestically. After the auction, they have seven months to arrange financing and 13 months to complete the plants, according to government guidelines.India's second solar auction took place December 2 and awarded 350 megawatts of capacity - 28 plants - to the lowest bidders.

Against a widening demand-supply gap that is likely to reach 265 MT in the next five years, the government today said it will seek Indonesia's cooperation for grant of blocks to Indian firms under a 'special status'.  The Ministry of Coal will "...impress upon provisional government/regional government to allocate blocks under their special status (most favoured nation type) to the Indian government coal companies...," Coal Ministry said.  Seeking allocation of coal blocks on "nomination basis", an official document of the Ministry said it will be sending a team from the Coal Ministry and CIL to Indonesia to pursue the matter.

Fifty-two coal-fired generators, more than half of the 89 thermal-power plants in India, had stockpiles of less than seven days’ supply on Nov. 27, the supervisory body said in a report on its website. That compared with 46 such plants a month earlier and 29 units a year ago.Among those plants, 31 were at a “super critical” status, with less than four days of stock. That compares with 14 such plants a year earlier, according to the government. Typical stocks are 15 to 30 days, it said.

It's not hard for an expert to imagine how one might convert earthquake motion into electricity. Ross Stein of the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif., offered these examples:You could sew up fault zones with lines that are wrapped around turbines like the pull-starter on a lawn mower or outboard motor. When the quake eventually struck, the lines would accelerate the turbines, briefly generating electricity. You could make a reservoir on the up-thrown block of a thrust fault. When the quake uplifts the block, you could let water flow through turbines to the down-dropped side, generating electricity. Many earthquakes increase groundwater flow and create geysers at the surface; you could use this water flow to turn turbines. You could install a turbine system on a breakwater in a tsunami-prone area, and the water of the tsunami could be forced to turn turbines. There is much more energy to be gained in this system, and there are even experimental energy systems in place designed to harness tidal energy.a
