IIT kanpur to set 1.75 MW solar plant !!?: Will other universities follow suit??

After setting up a 50 kilowatt solar power plant on the institute campus, IIT-Kanpur is now in the process of commissioning a 1,750 kilowatt roof-top solar power plant. This work would be done in two phases. In the initial phase, a solar plant of 350 kw capacity will be set up. This will take nearly six months. The second phase will be taken up later.

The power generated by the solar power plant will be supplied to the IIT-K grid and the same will be supplied back to the institute for meeting the power needs of the institute. This would also reduce the dependence on the power supplying agency in the city -- Kesco. At present, the 50 KW solar power plant which had been inaugurated July 3, 2013, is generating 250 units of power which is supplied to the grid. The same power is supplied to a student hostel in the institute to illuminate it. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his visit to the institute on July 3, 2010 had viewed the model of the 50 KW solar power plant which came up on the institute in three years time.

Importantly, IIT-Kanpur has major plans for the expansion of the solar power projects. The success of the 50 KW power plant paved the way for setting up of more such plants and 1750 KW power plant forms the part of the same plan. more..

University of Surrey has partnered with Tata Steel to transform renewable energy

Awarded to researchers from the Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) at the University of Surrey through the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UK-IERI), both programmes will involve close collaboration between universities in the UK and India, as well as with Tata Steel Research and Development UK.

The first project will bring together researchers from the University of Surrey and the University of Hyderabad, India, with collaborators from Tata Steel Research and Development UK to look into how to effectively capture and store solar energy using an approach known as ‘inorganics-in-organics', in which composite materials work together to increase efficiency. Tata Steel will lend its fuel cell expertise, partnering research with industry to provide technologies for improved energy generation and storage.

Tata Steel is part of the Indian multinational conglomerate company, Tata group, which comprises over 100 companies operating in seven business sectors, including communications and information technology, engineering, materials, services, energy, consumer products and chemicals.

The second project will examine the use of zinc oxide nanomaterials in ultra-high sensitivity gas sensors. These gas sensors can be used in environmental monitoring devices to deliver improved sensitivity and increased energy efficiency. They can also be used in breathalysers, and even for sensing potentially explosive gas leaks in places such as hydrogen storage facilities.

 HHV Solar ties up with RV College of engineering :Bangalore

Hind High Vacuum Co. Pvt Ltd (HHV), announced that it has partnered with RV College of Engineering, Bangalore (RVCE) on a solar research project. HHV has successfully developed and commissioned a sophisticated dual process thin film deposition system at the research centre in RVCE.

 

Thin film technology and the R&D group of HHV has been working together with the college on this project to develop high performance thin film coatings for solar thermal application, as a part of the project titled "Development of multilayer coatings for enhanced solar thermal absorption at high temperature" sanctioned by Department of Science and Technology (DST).

 

Established in 1965 at Bangalore to develop Indian self-reliance in high vacuum technology, HHV has now grown into a leading global player involved in the design, development and manufacture of off-the-shelf and customized equipment and products based on Vacuum Science & Technology.

 

IIT Bombay Launches 680 sqfeet solar home concept

 A neat minimalistic 680sqft house with low seating, ethnic accessories and upholstery, just perfect for the Indian middle class, is standing on stilts on Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay's Powai campus. 

The net-zero energy, sustainable house includes a passive solar design, home automation system, hybrid AC-DC network and reed bed-based grey water recycling system among other eco-friendly features. The house, called Project H Naught and powered by a 5-kw solar panel photovoltaic array, has been built by Team Shunya, comprising students from IIT-B and Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture. 

"Motivated by the challenge of sustainably meeting the energy demand of the hundred million new middle-class houses that are projected to be built between today and 2035, H Naught is a quintessential Indian home," said Rishi Agrawal, a team member. 

H Naught is Team Shunya's entry in the Solar Decathlon, an international competition in which 20 teams from across the world, design and construct a life-sized, fully functional, energy-efficient prefabricated home, completely powered by solar energy. The competition will take place in Versailles, France, in June-July. So, the team had to design their house in such a way that it can be shipped and reassembled in 10 days. 

The project, which forced several minds to come together to innovate and develop equipment and draw up designs that use the least amount of energy, was inaugurated on Thursday. Anil Kakodkar, former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission of India, was chief guest, and Ajay Mathur, director general, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, the guest of honor. 

The house stands on a steel frame, strengthened and insulated by gypsum board and fibre cement boards, the floor is a thick thermcol cemented sheet sandwiched between two concrete slabs, the furniture is made of gecko boards and the windows are made of two glass frames separated by an air cavity which provides insulation. The house has a living room, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a dining room, all designed in beige and brown. 

"Levelling the structure took a lot of time and the design process began with a lot of material. We initially thought of using bamboo, but this house was supposed to be in an urban context. It also didn't have a pucca element to it and bamboo available here has a lot of knots," said Sayuri Kulkarni, associate project architect for interiors and planning. While the approximate cost of putting the house together is Rs 40 lakh, if the steel frame is replaced by concrete, the cost would reduce to fit in the range of Rs 25 lakh, said professor Rangan Banerjee, faculty mentor for the team. 

*IIT Madras sets up energy policy center

Indian Institute of Technology, Madras today announced the establishment of the Centre for Technology and Policy (CTaP) at its campus.CTaP has been established to explore the interaction between technology and public policy to better address India's pressing development problems.CTaP will play a significant role in the design, promotion/advocacy and assessment of public policies impinged by technological and scientific innovations, and identification of key technology gaps in meeting development goals in the identified areas.


CTaP, established as an action-oriented centre, will support research to improve our understanding of the way that policy affects technology innovation and scale. The research here will focus on building this understanding in order to identify key policy initiatives that can encourage innovations and technology interventions to meet public goals.

 

CTaP's objective is also to provide feedback to technology innovators on how their work could be made more effective in a given policy setting. CTaP will draw on IIT Madras faculty expertise as well as Centre's research staff. In addition, it will enable extensive consultation and networking with policy makers, industry, investors and other stakeholders.

"The Centre will strive to provide hitherto unavailable analyses and strategy options to the national policy making bodies, by leveraging IIT-M's cutting edge research activities in the areas of water, decentralized solar energy systems, telecom and IT, online education and human healthcare technologies. The proposed Centre will aim to cast new light by taking a strongly inter-disciplinary approach involving the engineering and social science faculties as well as the incubation centres of the Institute", said Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, director, IIT Madras, during the launch of the Centre in Chennai today.

Converting rural illiterate india into solar engineers : a new initiative

 

 In India, 70% of the population lives in rural areas, mostly in poverty.But as a voluntary program has proven, impoverished people can become experts in solar power. Thanks to Barefoot College, an NGO based here in Ajmer, in the western part of India’s Rajasthan state, some 600 women have been fully educated about solar power, a small step towards eradicating poverty. 

Sunaina Das, 20, is reviewing all the components needed to make a solar lamp. Though she doesn’t know how to read or write, she’s learning to become a solar engineer.“I’ve come here for training,” she says. “I haven’t been here long, just 10 days. What I’m learning here is all new to me. Once I’ve learned everything I’ll go back to Jharkhand,” Das says.She’s one of 25 women from Jharkhand, in northeastern India, who will spend the next six months learning about solar power at Barefoot College, which was founded more than 40 years ago. 

On the popular TEDx talk show, its founder Bunker Roy says he wants to help women in rural communities by applying solar energy solutions. “Food here at the Barefoot colleges is solar-cooked,” he says. “The people who made that solar cooker are women — illiterate women. They actually built the most sophisticated solar cooker.”Each year, the college trains around 100 women in a six-month solar engineering training program. According to Ram Niwas, the college spokesperson, “In Barefoot College they can learn to assemble a solar system and they can set up fully a home light system, which is a panel on the rooftop connected with a battery charge controller. In the future, if they know which function is not working properly, they can repair it themselves.”

They choose to teach women for a reason, says Ram Niwas. “If we train women, families can get benefits through them. It’s especially important in the poor rural areas, where men migrate from the village to the town for jobs. So men leave while women stay in the village with their kids.”

 

They teach the complexities of solar power with a simple technique using colors and numbers. Dasrat, a teacher at the college, is also illiterate but explains that it’s not a problem to teach people who don’t know how to read. 

 

“How do illiterate people teach illiterate people? We created our own system. Black is zero and red is two and orange is three. Meaning that all the solar components have world standard colors, so that illiterate women can read the value of a resistance through color, for instance.”

 

Sunaina now knows how to set up and maintain a solar light panel that she will put on the roof. This will allow her to install a light and battery charger in her house. She can’t wait to return home and apply her new knowledge.

 

“In my village, we don’t have electricity,“ she says. “But when the lights are installed, it will be easier for us to read and for children to study. If they can’t study at home, they won’t do well at school. For the children in particular, this will make a big difference.”

 

After the training, Sunaina and the other students will be given solar lighting units to bring electricity to 25 households. The program will also mean saving on the cost of wood and kerosene.Courtesy

 

 *MNRE proposes collaborative R&D projects with other countries: Renewable energy

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) does not propose to establish Research and Development (R & D) Centre to promote clean energy in collaboration with any foreign country. However, collaborative R & D projects in various areas of renewable energy have been taken up involving, among others, institutions in USA, Germany, Spain and Denmark.

* CENTRE SETS UP NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF SOLAR ENERGY

There are no under graduate and post graduate courses announced for now, but there will be reasearh and training opportunities

The Central Government has set up an autonomous institute -- the NationalInstitute of Solar Energy (NISE) -- under the administrative control of the ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE).

The NISE, which will function as the apex centre for research and technology development and related activities in the area of solar energy technologies in the country, has been established by converting the existing Solar Energy Centre in Gwal Pahari village, Gurgaon. It was registered under the Haryana Societies Registration Act on October 24.

Its affairs would be managed by a governing council to be headed by secretary of the MNRE and an executive committee headed by the director general, according to an official statement released on Monday.

 

The institute would assist the MNRE and perform various tasks under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM), which targets deployment of 20,000MW of grid-connectedsolar power by 2022 in three phases. About 1685MW of solar power capacity had been installed during the phase I of the JNNSM against the target of 1100MW, the release said.COURTESY

"Three important benefits are technical, financial and social back-up systems of Institute of Solar Technology training program," said Mr. A. Naskar, President of Shyamsundar Child and Women Development Society.

ii) Assist energy vendors by providing on-site diagnostics of downed systems. This will save the vendor the time and money sending a technician from the city.
iii) Be able to determine if people have misused their system and advise them on better usage and maintenance strategies
iv) Troubleshoot their own community member's solar systems and generate income by selling their new skills
v) Serve as paid consultants for energy vendors.

Doctoral Program (Ph. D): General Information

School of Solar Energy (SSE), at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, is established to offer state-of-the-art experimental, theoretical and computational research facility in the thrust areas of solar energy technologies. The areas of research including but not limited to:

1.            Fundamental and commercial solar cell technologies, such as, crystalline and amorphous Silicon, Chalcopyrites and Dye Sensitized solar cells etc.

2.            Advanced, nano-structured and hybrid solar cells.

3.            Photovoltaic systems.

4.            Solar thermal systems and components.

5.            Supporting technologies, such as, electrical storage, inverter technologies, hybrid systems, grid tied and off grid technologies etc.

The academic program leading to the Ph. D degree is broad based and comprises of a minimum course credit requirement and a research thesis. The academic programme has been devised to provide a multidisciplinary approach of novel research work related to energy, characterized either by discovery of facts, or by a fresh approach towards interpretation and application of facts, or development of equipment making a distinct advance in technology.

1. Eligibility & Selection

Admissions to the Ph. D program are conducted based on the advertisement put on University and School websites, leading national newspapers and printed poster sent to leading colleges and Universities in India. The qualifying degree requirement for admission in to Ph. D program as follows: First Class or equivalent (60% marks for General categories; 55% for SC / ST/ Physically Challenged candidates) or CGPA/CPI of 7.0 or above (6.5 for SC/ST/ Physically Challenged candidates) in: i) M.Sc. or equivalent degree in Physics/ Applied Physics/ Electronics/ Optoelectronics OR ii) B.E./B.Tech./ M.E./ M.Tech or equivalent degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering/ Electrical Engineering / Instrumentation Engineering/ Engineering Physics/ Semiconductor Device Technology/ Energy Science & Engineering. Reservation for SC / ST / PC (Physically Challenged) candidates as per Government of India rules Selection process The applicants, short listed on the basis of their academic background and performance is called for the admission test & interview conducted by Institute.

2. Categories of Ph. D Students

The Institute admits Ph. D students under the following categories. All categories of students are selected through the same admission procedure (s) unless specified otherwise.

1.1 Regular:

A student in this category works full time for his Ph. D Program. He receives assistantship from the Institute or fellowship from CSIR/UGC/AICTE or any other recognized funding agency.

1.2 Sponsored:

A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing research in the Institute on a full-time basis. The student should have at least two years of working experience in the respective field. Sponsorship letter (Form 1) must be attached with the application. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student.

1.3 Self-Financed:

A student in this category works full time or part time towards the Ph. D Program. At the time of admission, he should have at least two years of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student.

1.4 Project Staff:

A student in this category is already working on a sponsored project in the Institute and is admitted to the Ph. D Program as a full-time or part-time student. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least two years.

The Department of Energy and Environment is engaged in research in the broad area of clean technologies to achieve energy efficiency and minimize adverse environmental impacts. The Gujarat Energy Development Agency has set the pace of Renewable Energy Development in the country with the foundation laid for Asia’s first Solar Park that envisaged an investment of Rs. 7500 crore. The Solar Park will be established on 2,000 ha of arid land in Village: Charanka (Taluka: Santalpur Taluka) District Patan bordering Pakistan. Plots have been allocated to 16 Private investors to generate to 176 MW solar power. The cost of the project is envisaged to be approximately Rs 1,287 crore. The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has started its admission process for an online diploma course in sustainable science, an official said on Tuesday.

The last date for admission for the one-year Post Graduate Diploma in Sustainability Science (PGDSS) course is july 30. "The course links the global issues to the local agenda and teaches the approaches in bringing sustainable livelihood in the developing countries with the focus on major challenges to sustainable development," said the varsity in a statement.


"One-way video and two-way audio web-counselling facilities and a number of online counselling sessions will be conducted to help the students for understanding the study materials," it said.

 As the race to meet the world’s escalating energy needs heats up, Stanford University is responding by offering a new professional certificate program in renewable energy. The online program, Energy Innovation and Emerging Technologies, explores emerging technologies that can transform how we obtain, distribute and store energy.

Determining which technologies work and can be brought to market mass-scale is an urgent challenge for engineers and businesses,” says Michael McGehee, associate professor of materials science and engineering and the academic director of the certificate program. “This is an exciting time to be in the energy field.” McGehee is joined by professors Yi Cui, Mark Zoback, and other lead faculty from the schools of engineering and of earth sciences.

Program participants, including engineers, product developers, product marketing managers, investors and policy makers, will gain a greater understanding of the entire energy landscape and the fundamentals of how emerging technologies work. They will also learn about opportunities to develop and market new technologies. The program requires the completion of four courses from a portfolio of six or more courses covering topics including photovoltaics, solar energy, biofuels, batteries, and shale gas.

Stanford is a recognized leader in distance learning delivered by the Stanford Center for Professional Development. One million students program for solar education

The SunPower Foundation today announced that it is teaming up with One Million Lights, a Palo Alto-based nonprofit that provides solar lighting to rural communities globally, to launch a solar education program for K-12 schools called One Million Students. The program provides educators with grade-appropriate curriculum structured to increase student understanding of how solar works and how it is being applied to generate clean, renewable energy in locations around the world. source

 

For every 10 jobs created in solar factories, there will be 15 jobs created downstream, in installation, financing, project development, and distribution.

Globally around 8 lakh people are employed in the solar industry, with 3,00,000 people in Europe alone. Currently, US solar industry employs about 1,50,000 people, and approximately 6,000 people are employed in the Indian solar industry. The solar industry will require 60-65 per cent electrical engineers, 20-25 per cent mechanical engineers, 10 per cent electronics engineers and remaining civil engineers in areas where technical expertise is required,” Choudhury elaborates.

Courses Offered

The course duration varies from a week, six months or even an extensive two to three years course depending on the institute and the extent of programme. To address the needs of the solar photovoltaic (PV) industry, various training programmes are been delivered by leading academic and industry experts. Various organisations conduct events at a larger scale like Solarcon India 2012 which will be taking place from September 3 to 5, 2012 at the Bangalore International Exhibition Center, Bangalore. JOB PROfiles

There is plethora of job profiles in this sector. From project head, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) head to project directors, GM operations/project, senior manager projects, manager projects, purchase manager, solar project design engineer, assistant technical manager et al there are positions aplenty.

Skills & eligibility required

Students must have completed higher secondary education in Science stream as a minimum eligibility criterion. Engineering graduates or final year engineering students are also eligible for masters courses. Whether an individual aspires to work in a social, corporate, or non-profit organisation, a course in solar renewable resources places you on the right track to landing a job.

Remuneration

Entry level positions start from trainee engineers in manufacturing, system and project design, installation, operation and maintenance, procurement et al. Today, a fresher/trainee engineer in a solar company can earn a salary ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 per-month. However, a candidate with a master’s degree can earn between Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000 per month depending on one’s personal skillset. Currently, professionals with 8 to 10 years’ experience in the solar industry are earning a salary of Rs 25 lakhs per annum.

SEMI INDIA LAUNCHES SOLAR PV TECHNICAL TRAINING PROGRAMMES

SEMI India, the Indian arm of the global industry organization, SEMI, launched a solar PV work force development initiative, with a three day short course on “Solar PV Power Systems:  Concepts, Operation and Applications” in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Workforce development was identified as a priority action area for 2011 by SEMI India’s PV Advisory Committee, comprising key executives from India’s solar PV industry.  The short course in Jaipur will be the first in a series of courses that SEMI will organize, in technical collaboration with NCPRE (the National Centre for Photovoltaic Research and Education, IIT Bombay) and offer in different centres across the country.

 

Need for solar skill/workforce development programs:

 

SEMI India’s workforce development initiative aims to address the needs of SEMI member companies and of the wider solar PV industry in India by offering high quality training programmes delivered by leading academic and industry experts and expanding awareness about state of the art solar/PV technologies, applications and practices among engineers and technical personnel. 

 

The rapidly developing solar/PV industry in India, motivated by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) as well as State government policies, is already experiencing a severe shortage of adequately trained and skilled technical manpower in achieving its early goals. Further phases of the JNNSM and the roll out of State government solar policies across the country will accentuate the need for trained technical personnel across all expertise segments from design, engineering and manufacturing to installation, operation and maintenance of solar PV systems. 

 

Globally, the solar and renewable energy industries are seen as major engines of job growth. “Renewable energy technologies generate more jobs per megawatt of installed capacity, per unit of energy produced, and per dollar of investment, than the fossil fuel based energy sector”  according to University of California studies. Various European and US studies suggest that in the range of 25 to 30 direct jobs are created for every MWp of PV installed. 

 

The EPIA & Greepeace “Solar Generation 6” Report, 2011, estimates that more than 228,000 people were employed in the solar energy sector in 2009 and projects that the solar electricity sector will become a powerful jobs motor, providing green-collar employment to almost 1.7 million people by 2020 and 2.63 million by 2030.

 

In India, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has estimated that there will be close to 100,000 jobs in PV by 2020. Industry sources suggest that if all job linkages are considered, PV jobs in India could far exceed this figure.

 

Speaking to the media after the inaugural event, M.M. Vijayvargiya, Director (Technical), Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Limited (RRECL) said, “With the ambitious Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission being operationalized, India is poised to take a huge leap in the solar/PV space. The inauguration of this training initiative today in Jaipur is an important step in addressing the needs of this key energy sector in India.  We are pleased that this programme has been launched in Jaipur as Rajasthan is emerging as a leading destination for solar power generation and manufacturing in the country”

 

Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki, IIT Bombay, said, ““We are pleased to join hands with SEMI in addressing the work force requirements of the Solar/PV industry.  Solar as an energy source presents great opportunities for innovation as well as job growth across all segments. At NCPRE, we are focusing on manpower training for Solar/PV at all levels: from the level of research programmes to technician training. Efforts are being made to conduct training programs and create PV course content in the form of both text and video. This training material will be available through the NCPRE web page and the distance education program (CDEEP) of IIT Bombay”.

PREAMBLE
The energy sector globally provides significant research challenges in the continuous development of new materials, devices and energy systems. Fundamental research contributions are required for the development of cost-effective and sustainable energy systems.

The problems of primary energy sources and greater concerns over global warming require fundamental breakthroughs in energy extraction, processing, conversion and utilization. Several innovative research solutions are required to shape the sustainable energy systems and to provide substantial energy security of the future. Solar energy is one of the promising renewable energy sources that can meet growing energy demands without degrading or affecting environment. The Solar Energy, therefore, has a tremendous potential in terms of harvesting it with smart technologies.

In 2010 the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) was declared by union government. The objective of the National Solar Mission is to establish India as a global leader in solar energy, by creating the policy conditions for its diffusion across the country as quickly as possible. JNNSM established a target of 1 GW of solar power by 2013 and 20 GW by 2020. In solar power generation, Gujarat already has been a frontrunner (policies since, 2008) and has established an installed capacity of more than 700 MW (as on April, 2012). Gujarat Government has already entered into power purchase agreement for 900 MW of solar energy. Other states of India, such as, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal etc. have also set respective plans. As on date no less than 50 industries and developers have started developing solar power at states and national levels.

Either it appears as a growing need of manpower by the growing industries in Solar Energy or the fundamental R&D that is very much necessary to harvest the Solar Energy in most efficient manner, the 2-year MTech programme at PDPU has been established. The M.Tech. programme plans to develop future human resources who can provide fundamental inputs required to meet the challenges of the renewable energy sectors with greater face up to the solar energy technologies, both PV and solar thermal.

The intake is to be through screening of applications, a written selection test followed by an interview. The core courses will provide a background of analytical and laboratory techniques as well as courses with more emphasis to solar energy harvesting materials, devices and systems. Several electives are provided in the curriculum to enable the student to specialize in their area of interest and relevant to their background.

The M.Tech. programme will meet the future need for skilled human resources in the energy systems technologies with sharp focus on the solar energy technologies.

The Solar Industry – A Brief Overview

Increasing energy requirements coupled with the depletion of fossil fuels around the world have pushed people to move towards alternate or renewable energy sources. The renewables market in India is mainly dominated by Wind, Solar PV and Solar Thermal energy systems.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems use cells which directly convert sunlight into electricity. These cells are made up of special substances known as semiconductors which perform the conversion process.

Global Solar PV installations reached 6.43 GW in 2009 - an increase of about 6% over the year 2008. The revenue generated from these installations reached $38 billion globally. European countries account for the vast majority of the installations, which total about 4.1GW.

India’s Potential

India lies in a sunny tropical belt region which is a region of high insolation (incident solar energy). The total theoretical potential is estimated to be over 5000 trillion kWh annually. Very little of this abundant resource has been exploited. The installed solar capacity in India is about 110MW of which only about 10MW is grid connected.

The National Solar Mission is working towards increasing the installed capacity of solar in India to 1-2 GW by 2013 and then increasing to 4-10GW by 2017. This clearly shows the viability of solar in India as there are going to be a lot of emerging opportunities in the field.

The government further aims to increase the growth of solar energy in India by providing incentives under the National Solar Mission and other Generation Based Incentives available through the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The government expects to spend about $19billion in this sector till 2022.

Industry demand for qualified Solar Technicians is growing as more consumers and businesses establish solar generation systems in their communities. The new solar installations coming up require the employees to have recognizable certificates as they too form a basis for the funding which is allocated to the companies. The demand for skilled technicians in both solar PV and thermal areas is rising. The push for alternative energy is only going to get stronger.

You could become a solar energy installer or maybe a professional energy auditor. But you will need the necessary qualifications. This is where good quality solar energy training courses come in. This leads to huge opportunities not just in the solar energy sector but also within the solar energy training sector.

Indian solar energy Training and Education

Opportunity

This is a clear opportunity area for businessmen in India to start giving training / education in solar energy. Looking at the various courses offered by the other universities both in India and abroad would provide you with an idea of the content and how to design the solar energy education course.

MNRE predicts that India will need 100,000 trained personnel will be required in the coming decade to work in the solar energy field. This number seems substantially low as even the wind energy sector with highly trained professionals and large resources available requires over 80,000 people over the next 5 years.

Making the right choice

Substantial time and effort has to be invested in order to go over to the various solar training provider. They should also be selective enough to choose the one which can give you good quality training while ensuring it is worth the money invested in it.

Care must be taken to ensure that courses offered are of high quality and is constantly updated with current trends in the solar energy industry. Care must also be taken to ensure that the course is recognized by the various governing bodies in India who are the premier authority in regards to solar energy.

Elements of a solar energy Course

At the very basic level, the solar training elements include the design features of the solar panels, the solar panels installation and safety related issues.

The chief goal of solar training is to present the idea of solar paneling and thus, to teach and train individuals in the different scientific and methodological features which are a part of solar panel training.

Integration with current curriculum

Since the nature of the energy system itself is likely to change in the future it is essential that renewable energy be integrated into the traditional engineering curriculum.

Draft Model prepared for MNES (Banerjee, 2003) provides two alternative modules to be integrated as lectures in existing courses.

  • Module 1 - Compulsory/core of 20 hours followed by an elective (full course) related to renewable. (Wind/Solar/Waste to Energy etc…)
  • Module 2 - Compulsory course on Renewable Energy (40 hours of lectures experiments)

Promoting Renewable Energy Education

There currently exists a kind of brain drain that leads to qualified students and professionals getting into other sectors such as Information technology or conventional energy sectors. This leads to the lack of availability of qualified renewable energy engineers within the sector.

A course in Environmental studies has been mandated for all Engineering students based on a Supreme Court judgment. MNES should initiate discussions with UGC / AICTE / IITs / MHRD to facilitate the integration of renewable energy in the engineering/science curriculum.

A team comprising of members from the renewable energy industry, academia and government should identify the requirements for certificate / diploma modules and use the existing institutions IITs, TERI, NITs as content providers.


School Education - In the case of school education a number of solar toys, renewable kits and solar trailers could be designed and disseminated in schools. As an example, solar powered computers are currently being tested by children in Indian villages. Workshops for training teachers should be carried out in each region. The different boards ICSE/KV/SSC should be approached to effectively implement this.

Web-based Module - There is significant potential in exploiting web-enabled education (e.g. Centre for Distance Education Programme at IIT Bombay) and Distance education through relay of a live classroom (e.g. IIT Bombay’s KRESITs Distance education programme through VSAT linked to remote centers in Pune, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Indore, Goa…). Video recordings of different modules can be prepared and made available via the web. This can be supplemented by classroom teaching and can provide flexibility of learning for working professionals.

Solar Energy Training in Existing Business Houses

Inhouse Training

As the renewable energy sector tends to grow and develop at a very fast pace an inhouse training program of sorts should be run in many institutions so as to keep the employees updated with the current trends.

Some of the institutions in the energy sector may need to impart training to existing employees to enable them to deal with renewable energy systems e.g. a State Electricity Board may need to train its engineers to deal with Wind generators, Grid connected Solar PV.Nonenergy companies (e.g. traditional manufacturing industry) may need exposure to renewable energy systems in order for them to exploit the potential for solar heating, energy from waste, renewable electricity.

The Solar Energy Centre (SEC), established in 1982, is a dedicated unit of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India for development of solar energy technologies and to promote its applications through product development.

 MNRE INITIATIVE ON SOLAR EDUCATION IN INDIA

 Government Supports Educational Institutions for Undertaking Renewable Energy Courses at Various Levels 

 

The Minister of New and Renewable Energy, DR. FAROOQ ABDULLAH informed Lok Sabha today that the Ministry has a two-pronged strategy to meet the requirement of skilled manpower for installation, operation and maintenance and repair of Renewable Energy Systems / Devices in the Country. The Ministry, as a long-term measure, has collaborated with Directorate General of Employment and Training (DGET) of Ministry of Labour for incorporating Renewable Energy in the syllabus of two–year regular ITI courses of seven trades namely electrician, electronics, fitter, turner, sheet metal works, plumber and welder. In addition, Ministry also supports the organization of short-term training programmes for various target groups on different aspects of Renewable Energy including installation, operation, maintenance and repair of Renewable Energy Systems and Devices. 

Under its Human Resource Development (HRD) Programme, the Ministry supports educational institutions in developing necessary framework for undertaking Renewable Energy courses at under- graduate, post-graduate and Ph.D levels to attract younger generation towards renewable energy sector. The major initiatives undertaken by the Ministry under these programmes are :- 

(i) Institution of National Renewable Energy Fellowship Programme (NREFP) for granting fellowships for Ph.D, M.Tech, M.Sc Courses in Renewable Energy, 

(ii) Institution of National Solar Science Fellowship Programme (NSSFP) to provide attractive fellowship (Rs. one lakh per month) and research grant to 10 selected scientists of the age group 35 to 45 years, to undertake research in cutting-edge areas in Solar Energy. Two National Solar Science Fellows are working in IIT Bombay under this programme, 

(iii) Institution of Renewable Energy Chairs in selected higher educational institutions to act as focal point on Renewable Energy education in that institution, 

(iv) Providing a one time grant-in-aid support of Rs.50 Lakh to selected educational institutions for upgrading laboratory and library facilities, 

(v) Developing course-curricula and study material for postgraduate, under graduate, diploma and ITI levels, 

(vi) Support to State Nodal Agencies (SNAs) and NGOs for undertaking short-term training programmes besides undertaking programmes for capacity building of officers of Ministry and SNAs. 

(vii) The Short term training programmes are being organized at Block and District levels to attract youth from rural areas to work in installation, operation, maintenance and repair.

About this Course

The course Solar Energy will teach you to design a complete photovoltaic system. The course will introduce you to the technology that converts solar energy into electricity, heat and solar fuels with a main focus on electricity generation.  Photovoltaic (PV) devices are presented as advanced semiconductor devices that deliver electricity directly from sunlight. The emphasis is on understanding the working principle of a solar cell, fabrication of solar cells, PV module construction and the design of a PV system. You will understand the principles of the photovoltaic conversion (the conversion of light into electricity). You will learn about the advantages, limitations and challenges of different solar cell technologies, such as crystalline silicon solar cell technology, thin film solar cell technologies and the latest novel solar cell concepts as studied on lab-scale.  The course will treat the specifications of solar modules and show you how to design a complete solar system for any particular application. The suitable semiconductor materials, device physics, and fabrication technologies for solar cells are presented. The guidelines for design of a complete solar cell system for household application are explained. Alternative storage approaches through solar fuels or conversion of solar energy in to heat will be discussed.  The cost aspects, market development, and the application areas of solar cells are presented.

After completion of the course, you will be able to:

b) explain the physical working principles of photovoltaic conversion in solar cells

    Since March 2010 Dr. Arno H.M. Smets is Assistant Professor at the faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science at the Delft University of Technology (TUD) in the Netherlands in the Photovoltaics Material and Devices group. He received his PhD in Physics from the Eindhoven University of Technology. From 2005-2010 he worked at the Research Center for Photovoltaics at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Tsukuba Japan. His research work is focused on processing of thin silicon films, innovative materials and new concepts for photovoltaic applications. At Delft University he is lecturer of the new BSc-courses like “Sustainable Energy”, “Solar Cells”, and MSc-courses like “PV Technology” and “PV lab Course”.

    The Solar Energy Technician Certificate of Specialization is designed to provide entry level skills to students seeking employment as an installer of solar photovoltaic or solar thermal systems. Students will gain a broad knowledge of alternative energy, system design and installation techniques. The program will prepare students for the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) exams in Entry Level Solar Thermal and Entry Level Photovoltaic.

    This program is held at College of the Canyons Canyon Country location in a new state of the art Applied Technology building. Additional classes and programs in alternative energy are in the plans to offer in 2012 and beyond.

    Who would be interested in this program?

    • People who already work in related fields, such as roofing, electrical, and plumbing. These might be contractors, or people who work for contractors, who want to add a new skill set and certification to their offerings. 
      Unemployed people who have a technological orientation and a willingness to do physical work.
      Current students who have not declared a major.
      Current students who may be pursuing a transfer option, who have a technological orientation, and need to support themselves through the rest of their schooling. Take two courses, pass the NABCEP test, and get a good job!

      Is this program a fit for me?
      The job of Solar Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal Installer may appeal to those who enjoy working outdoors at work activities requiring practical, hands-on problems and solutions; accordingly, this occupation does not involve a lot of paperwork. This occupation also generally interests those who are attentive to detail and enjoy completing work tasks.

      What does a photovoltaic installer do?
      Determine photovoltaic (PV) system design based on factors such as customer needs, budget, and site conditions.
      Install photovoltaic (PV) systems in accordance with codes and standards using physical layout drawings, electrical schematics, and instructions.
      Fasten solar modules to roof and fasten wiring, inverters and other support structures to building walls
      Apply weather sealing to array penetrations and other support structures.
      Check electrical installation for proper wire sizing, polarity, grounding, or integrity of terminations.
      Determine appropriate sizes, ratings, and locations for all system over current devices, disconnect devices, grounding equipment, and surge suppression equipment.
      Certify photovoltaic (PV) systems by verifying system functionality and conformity to performance expectations.
      Determine connection interfaces for connecting photovoltaic (PV) systems with utility services and other power generation sources.
      Perform routine maintenance on modules, arrays, batteries, power conditioning equipment, safety systems, structural systems, weather sealing, and balance of systems equipment.
      Understand electrical and power tool safe practices, fall protection measures and other environmental and safety hazards associated with photovoltaic installations.

      What do a Solar Thermal Installer and Technician do?
      Design active solar domestic hot water systems and solar pool systems.

      Assess collector sites to ensure structural integrity of potential mounting surfaces or the best orientation and tilt for solar collectors.
      Determine locations for installing solar subsystem components, including piping, water heaters, storage tanks, circulating pumps, valves, and ancillary equipment. 
      Install components and plumbing using pipe cutters, soldering equipment, plastic glue, electrical supplies, and hand tools.
      Connect solar thermal system  to existing water heaters and water sources.
      Fill system with water and check tanks, pipes, valves, pumps and fittings for leaks.
      Perform routine maintenance or repairs to restore solar thermal systems to baseline operating conditions.
      Understand plumbing, soldering and power tool safe practices, fall protection measures and other environmental and safety hazards associated with solar thermal installations.

    Hi  folks

    There is an article on " Careers In Renewable Energy" by Dr. Usha Rao. She is a reader in Department of Physics at Lucknow University, UP.

    The article came in Employment News Paper in 2010. It has good collection of the names of colleges and universities in India that offer courses related to renewables.Definetly, few more courses are coming up in 2011 at Anna University and few other South Institutes.

    But, if anyone of you is interested in short-term courses in Solar field then have a look at Energy Studies Department at IIT Bombay. They conduct all round year certificate and short term courses.

    If you google a little , you can find it easily. In case you don't get surely write your mail to me , i will forward it at its earliest.

    Department of Physics, S.V.University,Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh also offers M.Sc in Solar Energy.

    Though many institutions offer solar and Renewable Energy courses the demand is not there to join the courses. Though much advancement of solar energy is in the pipeline, not many job opportunities for Post Graduate students in Solar.  On the other hand there is great demand for Polytechnic, ITI trained students in solar energy as they are very much needed in the expanding solar field as in O&M and Infrastructure development.
