India’s recent solar energy tender has attracted bids from 20 project developers from across the world, with a cumulative capacity of 7.5 gigawatts (GW), a 10 times over-subscription.   The Rewa solar park, in the Madhya Pradesh district, will be developed in 3 phases of 250 MW capacity each, covering a total of 1,500 hectares. Of the 20 bidders, four have submitted to develop all three sections of the project, including ReNew Power (one of India’s leading renewable energy developers and backed by Goldman Sachs) and Adani Group (operator of India’s largest solar power project).

Government has approved a new scheme to provide financial assistance in the form of capital subsidy to small powerloom units for installation of solar photovoltaic (SPV) plants. The scheme aims to alleviate the problem of power cuts faced by the decentralised powerloom units in the country.

Major Indian firm Tata Power Solar, a subsidiary of the mammoth Tata Group, has become the first Indian manufacturer to achieve the 1GW milestone in terms of PV module shipments worldwide. The figure was achieved over a period of 27 years, although 60% of the shipments came in the last five years alone. Tata modules have now been shipped to more than 30 countries.

Country's solar power generation capacity stood at over 9 GW as on December 31, 2016 with Tamil Nadu having the largest output capability followed by Rajasthan and Gujarat, Parliament was informed today. Total power generation capacity was 9,012 MW as on December 31, 2016. Gujarat (1.16 GW), Rajasthan (1.32 GW), and Tamil Nadu (1.6 GW) have crossed 1 GW solar installations, while Andhra Pradesh (0.98 GW), Telangana (0.97 GW) and Madhya Pradesh (0.84 GW) are close to these states.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has signed an MoU with the Centre for the development of two mega solar parks in the rocky mountainous region of Ladakh with a total capacity of 7500 MW. However, the work on these projects has not been started as yet in view of non-availability of land and lack of proper infrastructure in Ladakh for transmission of power generated from the proposed parks.

Managing Director at Vikram Solar suggested that the government should increase subsidy on solar rooftop installations to 50 per cent, remove service tax on renewable project installations, extend tax holiday on solar projects by 10 years, and lift excise duty on solar equipment and raw material in the budget. Increased subsidy on rooftop solar installations from 30 per cent to 50 per cent in the budget will help India achieve its overall target of 100 GW by 2022

Karnataka is all set to exploit solar energy in a big way. The state is taking giant strides in meeting its energy needs through solar power. Rooftop solar development has caught on with government and corporate sectors alike. Work on the first solar roof project is also on the tracks for Metro. BMRCL has decided to install power panels on Byappanahalli and Peenya depot rooftops for the 2MW project. Three projects for Railways are under way.

EAI Cleantech Talent Recruitment Assistance for Indian Cleantech Industry Cleantech is a vast industry and will be inviting around $15 trillion investments globally over the next 25 years, and significant amounts of investment in India as well. Renewable energy, though more prominent than cleantech, is only a subset of cleantech. Some studies estimate the size of the cleantech / sustainability solutions market at 5-6 times that of the renewable energy sector. Cleantech includes domains such as  Solar Energy  | Wind Energy  |Bio Energy  | Energy Efficiency  | Green Buildings  | Water Management  |   Sustainable & Organic Farming  | Waste Management  | Hydro  | Energy Storage & Fuel Cells  | Smart Grid   EAI has created an exclusive division for recruitment for the cleantech sector – Cleantech Talent.

Solar power with storage is already available at half the cost, compared with power from diesel-run generators.  According to industry watchers, the biggest constraint to solar-and wind-powered projects is their inability to provide sustained power throughout the day. Even though solar-power tariffs have crashed to Rs. 4-6/kWh (from Rs.16/kWh and above) in the past two years, the current technology of battery-linked storage pushes costs to Rs.12-14/kWh for those seeking 24-hour solar power.

In the past year, the city’s rooftop solar power generation has jumped nearly fourfold. However, despite this apparently rapid response to the rooftop solar scheme, there is growing concern that it is on the verge of losing steam. The city had generated barely 7.5 MW of power in 2015-16 through the much-publicised scheme. By the end of 2016 however, the number had jumped nearly fourfold — to more than 29.1 MW — making it a total of 36.7 MW generated through photovoltaic cells placed on rooftops in the city.

Mercom Capital has released a new analysis which finds an ongoing fall in lending rates for solar projects in India, making solar projects with lower-priced contracts more viable. The clean energy consultancy estimates that average domestic interest rates for solar project financing fell below 11% in the fourth quarter of 2016, as part of a steady decline from above 11.5% a year prior. It further states that this fall in rates is making projects with contracts below INR 5 (US$0.073) per kilowatt-hour (kWh) viable.

Wind turbine maker Suzlon Group has announced that it has achieved 10,000 megawatt (MW) cumulative wind energy installations in India. Suzlon's 10,000 MW of wind installation is capable of powering over 5 million households per annum and offsets 21.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission annually which is equivalent to planting over 1,500 million trees.

Solar power tariffs are expected to fall substantially below Rs 4 per unit in the bids for 750 mw Rewa solar project. Tariff of Rs 4 per unit is the lowest till now for any utility scale project in India. According to a solar sector analysis firm, bids for the proposed and much delayed 750 MW solar power tender in the Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh are expected to be submitted early next week.

In a new policy move, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has announced financial incentives for DISCOMs to support rooftop solar installations. The notification proposes a financial support of up to Rs 3.75 million (USD 55,000)/MW for up to 1,350 MW of rooftop solar capacity. The funds can be used by DISCOMs for multiple activities including up-gradation of distribution network and IT infrastructure, building consumer awareness campaigns, setting up consumer helplines, training employees, rating installers etc.
