Electric bicycle with removable power kit For people who wouldn’t otherwise ride a bike, or who don’t want to arrive at work all hot and sweaty, electric-assist bicycles are a neat idea. Commonly referred to as pedelecs (for “pedal-electric”), they use an electric motor to augment the rider’s own body strength while pedaling, yet that motor can usually be switched off when they don’t need it. The only problem with that setup ... even when the motor isn’t being used, it and its battery are still there, weighing the bike down. For his prototype Velocity pedelec, however, Taiwanese designer Larry Chen…-more»

Electric bicycle conversion kit catches on in CaliforniaThe US market can be bleak. I will bet on the Indian market for low cost electric bicycle conversion kits. Not just in the semi urban and rural markets. But also in cities. Electric bicyles can be faster in city traffic and safer too.TIn California, e-bikes are not categorized as motor vehicles and do not require a driver’s license or registration to ride, making them accessible and inviting to consumers.Nationally, e-bike sales reached roughly 300,000 in 2010, double the number in 2009, according to Electric Bikes Worldwide Reports, a service that determines electric bike…-more»

Audi, the German Automaker is showcasing their new sports electric bike concept, Audi Wörthersee. Well, it is not just another e-bike. It combines the eco-friendly design with lightweight construction (21 kg (46.30 lb) in weight) and networking ability. With use of bionic principles and the 26-inch wheels made from CFRP, the Audi designers have made a bike that looks futuristic. Amazing what German engineering can do with a bicycle !!It may not be the appropriate product for the masses in India. But Just as there is a market for BMW, Audi, Toyota cars in India, this electric bicyle too will find a market. The Audi e-bike Wörthersee runs…-more»

More and more Arizona bicyclists are putting the metal to the pedal. In this case, the metal being an add-on gas or electric motor that allows their bikes to reach legal speeds of up to 20 mph on city streets.Industry experts say it's a national trend that is especially evident in Arizona, where riders don't need a license, registration or insurance.Bicyclists, bike-shop owners, city officials and industry analysts describe an almost underground industry that thrives on word of mouth and Internet searches. Bike shops and big-box stores also sell powered bikes, parts or installation kits.Brian Folts, 25, built his electric bike, or e-bike, in…-more»

Do you know that setting up a solar water heater system in your residence, apartments or commercial building entitles you to a 10 per cent discount on property tax?Or that installing a rain water harvesting system too provides you a chance to bag a discount of 10 per cent? GHMC Commissioner MT Krishna Babu on Wednesday revealed this lesser known clause in the GO 86 of the Building Act Rules during his inaugural address at the conference on ‘Use of Green Energy in Urban Infrastructure’ organised by the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI). http://ibnlive.in.com/news/go-green-reap-benefits-says-ghmc-commissioner/252170-60-121.html -more»

Dheen posted BHEL gains wealth of information on coal and ready to promote innovation and sustainable development of coal as a clean source of energy ! Ready for coal research! 0 5 months ago
In the backdrop of rising global energy demands, the approach of carbon capture and storage, through a combination of existing and new technologies, will enable cutting down CO2 emission by half in 2050. This could be fulfilled with a large-scale transformation in the way energy is produced, delivered and consumed, Dr John Topper, Managing Director, IEA-CCC, said on Friday, while addressing a workshop on ‘Supply & Demand of Coal and Power Plant Technology Evolution' here.Demand for coal has been growing faster than any other energy source and is projected to account for more than one-third of the incremental increase in… - more»

Dheen posted Remember Kyoto? Most Nations Don’t 0 5 months ago
In 1997, these nations collectively promised as a first step to reduce emissions by about 5 percent below 1990 levels by 2012. But only 37 industrialized nations agreed to binding targets under the treaty, known as the Kyoto Protocol; the developing nations promised simply to do their best. The overall results have been dismal, even by Kyoto’s modest standards. That agreement expires next year, and there is almost no chance that the delegates in Durban will agree on a replacement. Even 1997 signatories like Japan and Canada will not endorse a new treaty unless the Chinese do, which they won’t. What… - more»

Dheen posted Scientists at UAS, Dharwad, have grown coloured cottons, ‘economical’ and ‘eco-friendly’ 0 5 months ago
The earlier coloured cotton varieties in India were very poor with respect to yield and fibre quality, and hence were not commercially viable either for cultivation or for the use in textile industry. In 1996, research activities were initiated to improve these and to make them useful, under an already running project funded by the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI),” the scientists said.“The new variety is not genetically modified. The coloured cottons are improved through conventional breeding/genetic improvement by using the improved white linted genotypes for crossing. It involves more than a decade’s effort and is still a continuous process,”… - more»

Dheen posted Three nations that pollute the most are the biggest obstacles to setting a time line to a legally binding pact on global warming : EU 0 6 months ago
China, the U.S. and India seem the most reluctant to sign up to the EU’s “road map” pointing toward the next climate treaty after the limits in the current one expire next year, said Artur Runge-Metzger, the EU’s lead envoy on the environment.“The biggest barriers are the major emitters when it comes to the road map,” Runge-Metzger said today in an interview at United Nations talks in Durban, South Africa. “Legally-binding is a red line. Dheen commented on the blog Jayanthi Natarajan off to Durban talks with mandate to push equity, intellectual property resources and trade barriers 6 months ago
According to sources, Ramesh, who was head of India's climate negotiating team in 2010, reportedly expressed fear that India's tough stance can isolate it at the Durban talks. He was also of the view that India should keep its options flexible to avoid being described as a deal breaker.Another functionary, who opposed Natarajan's proposal, was planning commission deputy chairperson Montek Singh Ahluwalia. He suggested that India should not toe the line of rich countries, which have historical responsibility to reduce carbon emissions, and not the developing countries. http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/NewDelhi/Cabinet-nod-to-India-s-tough-stance-at-climate-talks/Article1-776791.aspx-more»

Dheen posted The shrinking per capita availability of water in India necessitates that corporates have a formal plan for water management 0 6 months ago
CRISIL Research conducted a comprehensive assessment of water disclosure practices of 500 publicly held companies in India. The study revealed that in 2010, only 30% of companies reported that they have company level water policy for prudent management of water usage. Similarly, 22% of companies reported that they have policies to manage waste water discharge. Only 3.3% of companies disclosed information on total quantity of water used and merely 1.5% reported the source from where water used is drawn. The study pointed out that sectors such as energy, materials and utilities are more proactive in disclosing information on waste water… - more»

Dheen posted If the offshore wind sector is to race ahead, an offshore grid network will be needed 0 6 months ago
Predictions for offshore wind energy suggest that by 2020, offshore wind will be responsible for 28 percent of the total wind energy generation, itself a third of all renewable electricity generation, according to EU forecasts. This estimate equals a total of 44 GW of installed offshore capacity throughout Europe by the end of this decade, an average of 4.1 GW annually. Since most of the offshore energy in Europe is to be installed in the Baltic or North Sea, the integration aspects of this offshore power to the different national electricity grids constitute a very important challenge to what is… - more»
