Kerala’s First Solar Powered College & Radio for Saving the Environment – Macfast College, Tiruvalla


Highlights:

  • A college located at a place called Tiruvalla in Kerala claims to have installed the largest power plant at Kerala producing 45,000 units of electricity per year.
  • The college also carries out a whole lot of green activities, one of their initiatives is to keep Tiruvalla clean. For this, they have started a radio channel to create awareness amongst the locals of Tiruvalla.
  • The college also started a green initiative which aimed @ educating every household @ Tiruvalla  to set up a vegetable garden  since Kerala depends on all the other states of India for getting most of its veggies.
  • The college is also taking  efforts to blend the traditional knowledge of the farmers with modern bio-science to get better results in agriculture.

Rooftop Solar Powerplant @ the Campus

A 25kW plant set up @ the capital city of Kerala- Thiruvanthapuram was the largest in Kerala until Macfast installed this plant.Macfast  has  installed a 30 kw rooftop solar power plant.

This plant has an yearly capacity of producing  45,000 units (kilowatt hours) of electricity which could meet half of the annual power demand of the institution.

The installation was done by Radiant Solar Private Limited, a Hyderabad based company with the approval of MNRE with as well  ANERT attached to Department of Power, Kerala.

Macfast has installed a 30 kw rooftop solar power plant.

The system contains 27,600 Watts panels, 30 kW bi-directional charger which functions as an inverter with grid-tie capability. The system also has a four-member charge controller, a 19-inch rack and a central monitoring device package.

The total cost of the installation was Rs. 72 lakhs (USD 144,000). About Rs.22 lakhs was obtained as a subsidy from MNRE and Rs. 37 lakhs was acquired as an low-interest loan from the State Bank of Travancore. The college management funded the rest of the cost.

Clean and Green City project

 Macfast college is located in a place called Tiruvalla in Kerala.  The Clean and Green City Project was started off with the Tiruvalla municipality which aimed @ keeping their city- Tiruvalla clean and green.

Propagating public awareness about this project as one of their main motives for which they started on with  Radio MACFAST 90.4 , a community radio to  create awareness among the Tiruvalla residents to address the pertinent need of environment management in Tiruvalla.

Bio-harvest Project

This was a joint project of Macfast along with Thiruvalla Agri-Horticulture Society, as part of the Clean and Green City project in Thiruvalla .

The main motive of this project was to set up a vegetable garden at every household, since Kerala depends on all the other states of India for getting most of its veggies.  The college is also taking  efforts to blend the traditional knowledge of the farmers with modern bio-science to get better results in agriculture.
