In 2011, The Toshiba International Foundation held the 4th Toshiba Youth Conference for a Sustainable Future in Thailand and was attended by youth from different countries including Japan, United States, Thailand, and Poland to discuss environmental aspects as bio-diesel from used cooking oil, rice planting, soap and charcoal making, water diverting, waste to value from earthworms etc in a global perspective.

  • Participation in Campaigns for Environmental Health

Toshiba participated in the Black Illumination 2011 and Star Festival Light-Down campaigns organized by the Japanese Ministry of Environment to switch off signboard illuminations as a voluntary service by the corporate to conserve energy for a period of 10 days in July-August 2011. As a result, the group saved 316,153 kWh of electricity at 80 facilities in Japan and abroad which amounts to about 87.8 years of electricity consumed by a single home.

  • Contribution to “Earth Hour” Event across Countries

Toshiba Group companies around the world participated in Earth Hour 2012 hosted by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and turned off signboards and other lights as a global eco-conservation effort in major cities of its operation worldwide including New York, Paris, London, Mumbai, Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong etc. The corporate also called on their employees to reduce electricity consumption during the day of event.

  • Community Environmental Initiatives in Poland

Toshiba Television Central Europe Sp. z o.o regularly organizes environmental seminars, eco-contests and other events at local elementary schools to raise awareness among children in Poland. It also does e-waste cleaning activities and during 2010-11, the regional division in Poland cleared electrical and electronic product wasts weighing more than one ton from employees’ homes.

  • Afforestation Program in Germany

As part of the Toshiba Group’s 1.5 Million Tree-Planting Project in Germany, an afforestation event was held in October, 2011 with 40 employees from Toshiba Europe GmbH, Toshiba TEC Germany Imaging Systems GmbH and Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH, planted voluntarily 2,000 beech trees.

  • Waste management in flood affected regions of Thailand

Employees of Toshiba Thailand Co. Ltd, Thai Toshiba Lighting Co. Ltd, Thai Toshiba Fluorescent Lamp Co. Ltd and other group companies undertook a large scale waste clean-up and recycling activities in flood affected regions of Thailand in 2011 and they also distributed food and medical aids to flood victims.

  • Participation in Marathon-run for Conservation of Aquatic Bodies in Philippines

A group of 50 employees from the Toshiba Information Equipment (Philippines) Inc participated in the Run for Pasig River event along with 86,000 companies, schools, and government- affiliated parties to emphasize the company’s joint approach to rehabilitation of local water bodies in Philippines.

  • Energy Conservation Initiatives in Sensitive Geological Sites of Toshiba’ Operation

Due to the impact of 2012 earthquake disaster in Japan, Toshiba’s Oita Operations implemented an electricity conservation project in which company’s employees contributed for 1,867 energy-saving ideas, allowed it to successfully reduce electricity consumption by 652 MWh/month. Most notable implementation was “Super Cool Biz,” a relaxed dress code designed for the summer heat in Japan.

  • Recognition of Toshiba’ Fundraising Efforts for Environment Welfare

Toshiba Ome Complex conducts fundraising activities every October in Japan to aid afforestation and environmental activities. In recognition of its continuing efforts, the company recently received a letter of appreciation from the Tokyo Greening Promotion Committee.
