In 2011, Mitsui installed solar panels on the roof of its head office building in Tokyo across 2,000 square meters approximately. This initiative led to reduction in CO2 and is equivalent to the amount absorbed by nearly 11.3 hectares of forest. In overall energy conservation acts of the firm, solar panels alone contributed to 7.5%.

Mitsui regularly conducts a program, “Mitsui Environment Month” on energy subjects to make its employees aware of energy expenses at home and work. This program comprehensively includes seminars, lectures and training sessions etc to improve overall performance of corporate’s employees.

  • Sustainable Business Plan with Biodiversity Protection in Australia

With Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) certification, Mitsui carries out an extensive eucalyptus tree-planting program in Australia together with Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. for the stable provision of wood chips since 1996.  In January 2012, the planted forest area from Mitsui was about 20,000 hectares across four major wetland and headwater zones in Australia. This program also helps to preserve native biodiversity that inhabit eucalyptus and alienate exotic weed spread.

  • Proactive Biological Measures for Bushfires in Mitsui’ Tree Farms

To prevent bushfires in its Australian Eucalyptus tree farms and thus the use of fire extinguishing chemicals, the corporate has provided feeding grounds for neighborhood farmers to remove undergrowth of bushes with their grazing sheeps.

  • Funding Projects to Restore Sensitive Ecosystems in World
  • Through the “Mitsui & Co Ltd Environment Fund”, Mitsui USA has started Wetland restoration project at Burnet Bay near Houston where employees of Mitsui USA and its group company, ITC work together with the United States NGO, Galveston Bay Foundation.

  • Employees from Mitsui divisions at USA and Argentina collaboratively work in afforestation activities around Lake Iguazu, Argentina. A Paraguayan NGO, Asociación Japonesa de Yguazú also assist them in this work.

  • Mitsui has granted 6,875,000 yen for a three year project in Rajasthan, India to prevent deforestation and desertification. To achieve the tasks, the Japanese firm has joined hands with an Indian organization, Gram Bharati Samiti to plant 100,000 trees, including native trees for fuel and animal feed, fruit trees in the sand hills and eroded valleys of the state.

  • The Environment Fund of Mitsui has supported with 9,952,076 yen in “The Yokohama Art” project to work with Kenyan local bodies for rehabilitation of country’ woodlands and grassland ecosystems etc using the clay ball seeding method. In 2007, significant results were seen over 23 hectares of afforestation sites.

  • In East Japan earthquake relief, Mitsui supported houses restoration efforts in affected sites using the Environment Fund where solar thermal systems were installed as radiation counter measures.
