Solid waste management schemes in Kolkata could soon hit a roadblock unless waste-to-energy conversion is made economically viable. Fuel value of the city’s waste is among the lowest, which makes it difficult to use it for power generation at a feasible cost, feel experts from the Jadavpur University. The need of the hour is to segregate wastes at collection points or devise new technology that could help scale down the conversion cost.

Experts on solid waste management from around the world converged in Kolkata on November 4 to discuss and debate waste-to-energy conversion. New methods and techniques were discussed at the meet that will have more than 70 representatives from municipalities around the country and from eight countries around the world. It was being organized by the Centre for Quality Control and Management Systems (CQCMS), Jadavpur University, with Good Governance India, an NGO.
