Mission: Make Sustainability Sexy

Needed: Investors

EAI is Looking for Investors

for

Its Disruptive Sustainability Products

Is it possible to make cleantech and sustainability exciting and sexy, and generate mass adoption? We believe the answer is yes, and are on the way to prove it.

Today, sustainability has been more spoken about than practised.

Because, it is not easy to practise as most aspects of sustainability are considered “dull” and “boring”.

Conventional methods to make folks adopt sustainable practices have largely failed.

But sustainability and cleantech are concepts that need to be adopted by all of us. In order for these to have mass adoption, they need to become far more easy, interesting and sexy than they are currently.

The world thus needs stuff that can convert millions of non-consumers into “consumers” of sustainability:

  • Just as low-cost airlines converted millions of those travelling by train or car to go by air route.
  • Or as smartphones made millions of non-consumers (like my mother) start using a computing device.
  • Or how the attractive thermostat made by Nest (acquired recently by Google) converted tens of millions of passive thermostat users into getting actively involved with energy savings through the same device.

The fields of sustainability and cleantech need similar disruptive products, and fast.

Launching such disruptive products has been our dream

As many of you will know, EAI was one of the first companies in India to start providing dedicated consulting and research solutions for the renewable energy and cleantech sectors. That was six years back, in 2009.

Today, we are a well-known brand for the renewable energy sector in the country. We operate some of the most recognized renewable energy properties in the country – the EAI Web site, the EAI Daily newsletter, and the EAI Club online community.

Besides, our consulting and research have benefitted hundreds of stakeholders – from small businesses to governments to Fortune 500 companies, global organizations such as World Bank and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. (More about our consulting from http://consult.eai.in , and our research publications from here and here )

All along, we knew that all the above were stepping stones for us to develop scalable and powerful products.

We are now on the verge of launching disruptive sustainability products

About three years back, we started putting together the building blocks for products that can make sustainability and cleantech easy and sexy. In the last one year, we accelerated these efforts, and my team has now launched the first set of disruptive products in this space:

  • Sustainable Energy – Accelerating the Growth of Rooftop Solar – An online platform to drive large scale adoption of rooftop solar (especially industrial and commercial establishments) in India.
  • Sustainable Health – Facilitating Health and Fitness Activities for All – A smartphone app that can make hundreds of millions to start adopting healthy habits and fitness activities

You can review more details about each at the end of this note. In brief, each of the above incorporates components that make it far easier to use/adopt for specific non-consumer segments.

So, What Next?

In order to take these products to the next level, we need financial investments.

Significant amounts of research, development and prototyping have been completed , and the first versions for all of them have already been launched in the market.

We feel the time is right for us to invest resources to scale these products to the next orbit. Such scaling will require financial resources beyond what we can rustle up with our existing revenue streams.

We plan to approach the venture capital community in 2015, but in the meantime, I thought I’d put up this information online for EAI members and well-wishers. If any of you could be interested in investing on your own, or might know someone who could be interested in investing in disruptive solutions products such as these, please do let me know.

I am positive that the products we are working on – either the way they are, or with tweaks – can make a dramatic difference to specific segments, and consequently, to our planet.

Brief details on each of the products are provided right below, and should you desire, I can provide more detailed presentations on each of the products we are working on.

Those interested in knowing further on pursuing this opportunity can let me know by dropping an email to me.

Thank you for your time!

Details about the Products We are Working On

Solar Mango – Accelerating Rooftop Solar Adoption in India

Motivation: Rooftop solar has the potential to be a significant sustainable energy source, as it provides renewable energy at a distributed level. However, significant practical guidance is required for consumers for rooftop solar adoption to happen at a faster pace. Wouldn’t it be great if a platform could provide this guidance to convert millions of rooftops into solar power plants?

ProductSolar Mango – Aim is to facilitate millions of consumers (especially commercial and industrial) to go solar. This is done through a mix of detailed guides, technology tools, apps and videos. Most of the guidance is from online and cloud platforms, ensuring high scalability.

Disruption: While tens of thousands of industrial and commercial enterprises in India wish to go for solar on their rooftops, it is difficult for them to take their next step owing to the complexities involved in both understanding and in taking the first step.  Solar Mango aims to simplify the process of going solar through a mix of easy guides, apps and hands-on assistance through vendor partners, and make them adopt solar.

Market – Currently, this product is only for the Indian market, with a focus on commercial and industrial establishments

Geography – India

Status – Platform is live and already commercial.

Simplifity – Facilitating Fitness Activities for Non-doers

Motivation: Simple health and fitness activities done every day could go a long way to make hundreds of millions of people more healthy, avoid hospital costs and have a much higher quality of life. However, most people do not perform these simple activities. Wouldn’t it be great if technology could make them undertake these activities every day?

ProductSimplifity – This Android app has the potential to make hundreds of millions become healthy through a mix of reminders, suggestions, analytics and interesting interfaces. The app acts as a key motivator that makes people do the fitness activities that they otherwise do not.

Disruption – While there are a number of apps focused on the health and wellness markets, most of them are for those who are already performing health activities to track their performance (walking, running, aerobics). How do we convert a large majority who do not undertake these healthy activities? This smartphone app (right now only for Android) has the disruptive potential to convert the non-doers into doers.

Status: First version already launched and can be downloaded.

Market – To begin with, the focus will be on white collar professionals who are 40+ years old, and seniors.

Geography: Global
