EAI's Offerings in Solar PV Module Manufacturing

The Solar energy sector in India is witnessing unprecedented activities. With the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy(MNRE) of Government of India announcing the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission(JNNSM), the interest in the sector has gone up and new opportunities are presenting themselves for anyone wishing to enter this industry. One such opportunity is the Solar PV module manufacturing in India. The JNNSM guidelines stipulate that all the grid connected Solar PV plants in India coming under the scheme will have to use Solar PV modules that are made in India. That translates to the solar module demand as follows.

  • Phase 1 (2010-2013): 500 MW
  • Phase 2 (2014-2017): 2000 MW
  • Phase 3(2018-2022): 7500 MW

In addition some of the state governments have their own Solar Policies. A total module demand of about 1300 MW is expected in the next two years alone(2011-2012). This is not considering the demand for off-grid applications like Solar lanterns, Solar street lighting and various other applications. However the total PV module supply from India is between 700 MW and 1000 MW. Even though the existing players are ramping up their capacities, there will enough local demand for lot of capacity addition in this segment.

Energy Alternatives India(EAI) has done quite a lot of analysis of the sector and has been assisting quite a few clients in venturing into module manufacturing. If you are interested in setting up a module manufacturing plant, here is what EAI can do for you.

Stage 1: Techno-economic feasibility study

a. Market Potential

EAI will provide inputs on the overall market size for solar panels, and indicators for solar panel supply and demand. It will comprise:
  1. Demand and supply for solar PV modules in India and abroad–current and projected.
  2. Challenges and opportunities in the Indian solar PV market
  3. Government incentives under the National Solar Mission.
  4. Key barriers for the solar module manufacturers.

b. Land, Machineries and Technologies

EAI will provide inputs on the key details on machineries and technologies required for producing solar PV modules. It will comprise:
  1. Approximate land required for a solar PV module manufacturing plant
  2. Key machineries required for solar PV module manufacturing and the suppliers of these machineries, both in India and worldwide
  3. Details of emerging technologies in solar PV module manufacturing

c. Investments and Returns

Here, EAI will provide key inputs on the investments required and estimated returns for solar module manufacturing companies. It will comprise:
  1. Capital costs for setting up solar PV module manufacturing plants ,including the break-up of the capital costs
  2. Operating expenses and Working capital requirements for solar PV module manufacturing
  3. Margins, IRR and RoI

NOTE: This section on Investments and Returns could assist the client in taking a decision on whether to invest in Module manufacturing plant in India. Should the client wish to have a bankable Detailed Project Report (DPR), EAI can create a DPR for which, the consulting fees will be worked out separately.

Stage 2: Assistance in the Installation of the Solar PV module manufacturing plant

a. Installation of the plant

In this section, EAI will identify and shortlist the most suitable turnkey module assembly line provider. EAI can also assist the client in coordinating with the turnkey line provider during installation.

a. b. Raw material supply contracts

EAI will compile the list of all raw material suppliers and provide a shortlist of the most suitable suppliers to the client. EAI can assist the client in getting Request for Quotations (RFQs) from these suppliers and assist in entering into purchase agreements with the suppliers.

c. Module sales

EAI will assist the client in the process of closing module sales deals by collating collate the following information about module sales

  • The top 5 countries for solar PV module and the amount of module purchases they make from India
  • Competitive position of India for exporting to each of the top 5 countries
  • Insights on the profiles of the top customers who purchase solar modules from India. These will involve the sizes of power plants
  • Insights on the key drivers behind the success of the successful module exporters in India
