The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has been successful in reducing the carbon emission level of the city as a result of its initiatives to lower energy consumption.

The civic body has been able to bring down its CO2 emission below the national level, said a survey carried out by ICLEI-South Asia.

Along with AMC, around 53 cities of India and neighbouring countries participated in the project called ‘The Roadmap of South Asian Cities and Local Governments for the post 2012 global climate agreement’, which was carried out by ICLEI-South India and supported by the British High Commission in New Delhi.

According to a survey, Ahmedabad’s carbon emission was 67,80,752 tonnes during the year 2007-08.

The per capita CO2 emission in Ahmedabad is 1.49 tonnes, which is lower than the national average of 1.75 tonnes, said the survey.
