The heat of global warming and the global economies have forced India to step up its pressure on the auto sector to make deep cuts in carbon footprints.

Despite having introduced Euro emission norms way back in 2000, India’s transport sector contributes 15-20 per cent of the total greenhouse gas emissions and the sector is ranked third, after the power and agriculture sectors, as the highest polluters.

The new fuel efficiency norms will be based on kilometre per litre (kmpl) figure. Fourteen cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore have to graduate to Bharat Stage IV by April 1, 2010. The rest of the country will move to Bharat Stage III.
