Was doing some research on green buildings in Tamil Nadu and was surprised to find that the state is doing reasonably well. Why surprised? Let’s say it’s just the “familiarity breeds contempt” syndrome.

Some updates on the status of green buildings in Tamil Nadu. You might be pleasantly surprised too, if you were from Tamil Nadu.

    • Out of the 164 LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified buildings in the country, Tamil Nadu alone is home to 41 of them. This accounts for one fourth of the total LEED certified green buildings in India.
    • In addition, the state has four out of the eleven Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) certified buildings. Five more green buildings pre-certified by Indian Green Building Council are under construction in the state.

EAI’s Consulting Division provides special assistance for entrepreneurs/businesses interested in exploring opportunities in the green buildings domain.See here for more.

  • Eight office buildings in Chennai were rated energy-efficient by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), the energy conservation body of the power ministry. Three more in Tamil Nadu also received this rating.

Tamil Nadu government offers a tariff rebate for consumers who install solar water heaters in their buildings / industrial facilities. Outside of this, there appear to be no major subsidies. The green building concept could have gained much higher momentum with better and a more diverse set of incentives that addressed many aspects of green buildings than just water heating.
