Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is setting up small hydro-electric projects in the State.

KSEB is piloting small hydel projects at Vilangad (7.5 MW), Chathankottunada (6 MW) and Kakkayam (4 MW) under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), an initiative under the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC) to reduce carbon emissions.

If the UNFCCC green-signals the proposal, the KSEB will be the first electricity board in the country to set up CDM-aided hydel projects. By cutting greenhouse gas emissions, the KSEB hopes to rake in carbon credits which can be traded.
