Iit was formally inaugurated in 1959. Iit madras is a residential institute with nearly 460 faculty, 4500 students. It does research on synthesis of energy from waves; ocean thermal energy and its applications; currents and tidal power; offshore wind plants.Iit, madras in 1982, primary estimates indicate that the annual wave energy potential along the indian coast is between 5 mw to 15 mw per meter.
