Q3 from C3 is a platform where we collect feedback and insights from Chennai folks from diverse backgrounds on climate change and more specifically, climate action.
Chennai Climate Consortium (C3) thanks Madhavan for his valuable inputs.
Like elsewhere, Chennaites are bombarded with information on threats from climate change, but they are told very little about what they can do. How can a strong awareness be created about climate action so that the average Chennaite gets involved?
As a tropical seaside city, Chennai will be one of the first places to feel the problem of rising sea levels. The record heat will also cripple the productivity of the population in the city. These are immediate issues facing Chennaiites and by engaging actively with the mass media and government, awareness can be raised and get Chennaiites involved in at least the climate change adaptation part(not sure how much they can do on the climate change mitigation, other than using public transport).
What are your recommendations for Chennai to become a role model for climate action for cities worldwide?
Chennai’s expanding public transport network (mainly metros) is already a role model, and more avenues to encourage cycling (at least during the cooler parts of the year) could help. Increasing the EV charging infrastructure could be another.
Personally, what types of climate action or sustainability projects would you like to be involved in?
Resource usage reduction (energy as well as other resources) is a low hanging fruit, and anyone can start doing it anytime without a lot of investment. This could be something that I would be interested in.
