Q3 from C3 is a platform where we collect feedback and insights from Chennai folks from diverse backgrounds on climate change and more specifically, climate action.

In this post, we provide the insights from Umesh Vasu, who is the Founder of Tharam-Thiran Green Energy Flow Private Limited, a firm providing long-lasting, Cost-effective, Safe and eco-friendly energy storage solutions.

Chennai Climate Consortium (C3) thanks Umesh for his valuable inputs.

Like elsewhere, Chennaites are bombarded with information on threats from climate change, but they are told very little about what they can do. How can a strong awareness be created about climate action so that the average Chennaite gets involved?

From my point of view, awareness can be only created by being an example. Each one of us should set an example for others by incorporating small actions in our lives to inspire others to do the same. This chain reaction of small actions to help the environment will count as a big step towards climate action. Some of these could include, switching off electrical equipment when not in use, bringing our own reusable bags while shopping, increasing the use of cycles to travel short distances etc. The ultimate essence however, lies in being an example.

What are your recommendations for Chennai to become a role model for climate action for cities worldwide?

A few ways through which we can achieve this would be by giving carbon credit scores to various industries and their companies. This would incentivize companies to perform better in this vertical as they a good score would lead them to receiving certain incentives. Further, on a political level, we should maximize our efforts to reach out and seek help to clean and maintain the natural resources of our city.

Personally, what types of climate action or sustainability projects would you like to be involved in?

I would personally like to be involved in projects dealing with Recycling and Waste Management and Renewable Energy.
