To (M)eat or not to (M)eat? – TODAY’S CLIDEMY CLIMATE POLL

Every time you swallow something – unless you eat stones or sand – you indirectly emit CO2. All right, I’m not here to give you the guilt trip while you enjoy your food. But knowing the following might be of help.

Per Kg of protein served, a Kg of beef could release as much as 40 Kg of CO2, sometimes even 50 over its lifecycle. To get the same 1 Kg of protein from peas, the emissions are only about 0.4 Kg – 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐡𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐟. Lamb, mutton perform better than beef, but they still emit 50 times that for peas. That is, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐚 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐟, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐭 100 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐎2 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 sitting next to you and munching his peas does for the same protein input.

But no one is attempting the criminal act of stopping you from having meat – that would be rank injustice, striking at the core of human values and aspirations, wouldn’t it?

Rather, it only brings us to today’s Clidemy poll. 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐭?
