Will electric planes ever fly?

Satya Chakravarthy of Indian Institute of Technology, Madras might want me to think about that title again.

Because he has been pioneering electric aviation in India through The ePlane Company, apart from pioneering many other efforts in aviation – AgniKul Cosmos, GalaxEye – and stuff outside of aviation too – Aerostrovilos Energy, Avishkar Hyperloop, TuTr Hyperloop.

But flying electric planes is still in its infancy. Many wonder if commercial aviation can ever fly on battery electric propulsion – fundamentals seem to be against this. Hydrogen-based perhaps – hydrogen in the current aircraft engines? Or in fuel cells? Or should we just use liquid biofuels (sustainable aviation fuels as they are called) as a drop-in substitute to the currently used fuels?

You can see how complex things are. Or how exciting, if you are a researcher.

I have requested Satya Chakravarthy to spend some time demystifying electric / low carbon aviation during the Chennai EV Innovation workshop, May 17, DLF Cybercity. Organized by Chennai Climate Consortium

Those of you interested in knowing the future of low carbon aviation, be there to listen to his insights as well as to interact with the man himself.
