Narsi’s Notes

During some of our consulting assignments in biomass and biofuels, we had the opportunity to review the efforts by Numaligarh Refinery for bio-ethanol from bamboo, which can be classified as cellulosic ethanol.

The intention is there, and so is the technology. But cellulosic ethanol plans by IOC and HPCL have not lived up to expectations yet mainly owing to the much higher than expected cost of production – both these refineries were planning to use paddy straw as the main cellulosic feedstock.

It will be good to see the economics of the bamboo-based ethanol pathway.
