And climate activists play this role – be they in the form of remarkable individuals such as Greta Thunberg or passionate organizations such as Greenpeace International .
Many times however, activists call out what needs to be stopped without really providing effective alternatives.
Perhaps it is not their job to provide alternatives, but switching off all coal plants without an alternative will be switching off all our lights and fans and ACs – are we OK with this?
I remember listening to the TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné when someone asked him why his company was not in a position to radically cut down all fossil-based energy generation. He said something on the lines of – ?? ????? ???? ?? ?? ?? ?????, ??? ???? ?? ?? ???? ???? ??? ????????? ???????????? ?? ???? ??????. ?? ???? ????, ?? ???? ?? ?? ???? ?????????.
I was sitting so close to the stage when he said this that I was sure he meant it!
But many activists want all these polluting avenues to be shut today – well, yesterday. And such an impractical posture has the potential to do more harm than good – by making key stakeholders being pressured into taking hasty or poorly designed decisions.
