Taj Pamodzi, Lusaka was recognized by the Zambia Environment Management Agency (ZEMA) at the recently concluded Environmental Awards 2013 for the hotels’ sound environmental management practices. This award is initiated by ZEMA, apex government body for handling environmental issues in the country. Each year, ZEMA awards organizations, institutions, agencies, small and large businesses, academia and the citizens for sound environmental practices.
This year, Taj Pamodzi secured 3rd place, chosen from a variety of industries across the country. A team of auditors surveyed the eco-practices and initiatives of the hotel. Segregation of waste, monitoring of smoke quarterly from boilers, involving suppliers and guests in environment initiatives, water saving measures, phasing out of CFC/ HCFC equipment plan, effective and proper storage of chemicals and purchasing of local organic fruits and vegetables are some of the initiatives employed by the hotel.
“Winning this award”, as General Manager, Mr. Sanjay Sood said, “was due to the commitment of all associates at Taj Pamodzi Hotel,Lusaka who put in their best efforts to adhere to the standards set by Earth Check and has emerged as an example of a TATA organization which is committed to environmentally sustainable tourism. Being a part of the Tata’s and the Taj Group of Hotels, Taj Pamodzi Hotel, Lusaka is a pioneer in the tourism industry and follows sound environmental practices in the country, which is being recognized by ZEMA, the apex environment management body which has recognized us with this award.”Going forward, the hotel plans to install a recycling unit, encourage local farmers to supply organic vegetables, engage with NGOs to work on reduction of plastic waste and supply of plastic free products, install 200 LED lamps, work on solar heaters for pre-heating water and much more.
