Although India is normally one of the world’s largest sugar manufacturers and exporters, the country has become a net importer in 2009. “It is fair to say that India is currently influencing the sugar market,” said London-based Steve Baldey, from OP Secretan, a shipbroker specialising in the sugar trades.

India could revert to exporting sugar within the next one or two years dependent on its production over the next season, Mr Baldey said.
