It was only a few minutes back I wrote about how a small atoll near New Zealand was going solar, as solar PV is already competitive compared with the high costs of power from diesel.

Now here is the (in)famous Alcatraz Islands near San Francisco resorting to solar as well. Read more from this Forbes report

“The PV is capable of supplying all of the island’s electricity demand (Jim Calvinperez told me the island’s typical load is 90 to 120 kilowatt-hours). Over a year, the solar-powered microgrid will reduce the running time of the diesel generators from 100% to 40%.” Interesting indeed
