Bharat Forge, recognized as an Asia-Pacific Climate Leader in 2023, is committed to combating climate change and reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

They have pledged to plant 1,000,000 trees and absorb 2400 MT of carbon dioxide by 2030. In terms of solar energy, they have made an additional investment of Rs 2.87 crore to use the remaining 8.20 megawatts (MW) of solar power from Avaada SataraMH Pvt Ltd (ASPL), agreeing to use a total of 40.70 MW of solar power from ASPL.

In FY 2022, 24.25% of their electricity consumption came from renewable sources, with 64,061.267 MWh from solar energy and 32,164.826 MWh from wind energy.

Deep dive into our work

They have installed conversion kits in the forging and heat treatment furnace pipelines to replace furnace oil with natural gas, which emits about 50% to 60% less carbon dioxide when combusted in a new system. The energy meters at the plant are connected to a Central Energy Monitoring System, which triggers automatic notifications on excess energy consumption.

Bharat Forge has also undertaken measures like using induction heaters instead of fuel-fired furnaces for die-parts and installing LED lights. They have initiated a program to retrofit existing machinery and fuel systems with devices to monitor and reduce the usage of carbon-intensive fuels.

Their manufacturing facilities have an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), and as a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) company, they ensure not to discharge any waste or treated water from their factory premises. All treated water is recycled efficiently and used for their operations to reduce freshwater consumption.

In FY 2022, they initiated the recycling of waste oil via a change in disposal pathway to reduce the quantity of hazardous waste and ETP sludge to reduce the disposal to landfills. Further, all hazardous wastes are handled as per MPCB regulations and they are sent to relevant authorized agencies for proper treatment. They recycle and reuse the entire metal scrap generated in their process.

Partnerships in Decarbonization

Kalyani Powertrain Limited and Harbinger Motors Inc. The joint venture, ElectroForge, focuses on developing electric drivetrain solutions for the commercial vehicle market. Electric vehicles are a key part of decarbonization efforts as they produce zero tailpipe emissions.

Alstom-Bharat Forge Power Ltd. (ABFPL), The manufacturing facility at Sanand produces supercritical turbines and generators. Supercritical power plants are more efficient and produce less carbon dioxide per unit of electricity generated, contributing to decarbonization.

Coal India and BHEL, The joint venture aims to venture into the Coal to Chemicals business, starting with the establishment of a 2000 TPD Ammonium Nitrate Plant using BHEL’s in-house developed Pressurized Fluidized Bed Gasification (PFBG) technology. This technology can potentially reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional coal combustion.
