The Indian Ministry of New Renewable Energy has agreed in principle to develop Shimla and Hamirpur towns as Solar Cities and Dr. Y.S.Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan and National Institute of Technology (NIT) Hamirpur as Energy Parks in the State under the Ministry of New Renewable Energy Programmes of the Government of India.

The Union Ministry would be extending best possible assistance to the State Government to execute mini and micro hydro electric projects in the State and generate energy and employment to the local people.

The state chief minister said that 292 micro projects upto 5 MW had been allotted during past one year of which 273 projects with aggregate capacity of 456 MW had been allotted to Himachali entrepreneurs. He said that the State had simplified the process and procedure and fixed time frame for clearances. He said that IPPs developing projects upto 5 MW were being provided concessional royalty for selling power to the HPSEB.
