Enabling energy saving in hospitals through ICT - learnings from AIIMS' efforts

Source : Economic Times

Notes by Narsi

How can hospitals go green in a sensible manner?

A recent case study of the premier AIIMS hospital is instructive Some highlights I found useful:

  • Installed a new rooftop Solar Power system of 693 kilowatts peak (KWp) - no surprises here
  • Upgraded the HVAC system with energy-efficient equipment
  • Replaced 33,000 conventional lights with LED lights
  • Deployed an ICT-enabled Energy Management System (EMS) to integrate different systems and enable real-time energy optimization.
  • A new Hybrid Power Factor Correction (HPFC) system to ensure fewer harmonics and balanced load in the electrical system, thereby drastically improving the availability and reliability of medical equipment like MRI and X-Ray machines - OK, this is more for performance than for energy efficiency.thought

Overall, the initiatives facilitate better management of energy resources, improved indoor air quality, free solar energy, and improved diagnostic capabilities to deliver better patient treatment.
