Global renewable energy jobs: 12 million today, 45 million by 2050

For those keen on shifting to a decarbonization career, here are some stats that could help you firm up your mind.

Global renewable energy jobs will grow from about 12 million today to about 45 million by 2050.

Zooming to India, from about 1 lakh jobs (0.1 million), the renewable energy market is expected to grow to about 1 million by 2030 and 3.2 million by 2050.

Mind you, this is just for renewable energy. Estimates done by my team at EAI suggest that the total decarbonization pie could be 5-7 times as large as just renewable energy alone.

If you are curious which sectors will contribute to most of these jobs within renewable energy, here's the expected pecking order: Globally, solar power comes on top, no surprises there. IRENA estimates that bioenergy will be the second-largest contributor to renewable energy jobs until the 2050s, followed by wind and hydropower.

For India, large portions of this growth are expected to come from the bio-energy and solar energy sectors.
