Can agroforestry help achieve India's sustainable developmental goals?

Source : Down to Earth

Notes by Narsi

Agroforestry is an intentional integration of trees on farmland. It offers significant godsends, both in economic and sustainability dimensions. In the latter, agroforestry is estimated to have a fairly high potential for carbon sequestration within the agricultural and farming ecosystems.

Most of us think this is a very niche, uncommon practice, but you will be surprised to know that it is actually being practiced in over 10% of total agri lands - over a billion hectares. That is not exactly small.

In India, the potential for agroforestry can be extended to about 75 million hectares, though the current area with agroforestry is only about 20% of that.

This avenue thus provides excellent potential as a sustainable & economically attractive avenue for decarbonization.
