Digital freight network for lower carbon footprint

Source : India Times

Notes by Narsi

Many freight vehicles travel long distances carrying no load at all. Now, given that an empty vehicle almost always weighs more than the maximum payload load it can carry, it signifies that massive amounts of CO2 emissions from the freight sector happen for no value-added.

A KPMG report estimates 9 million trucks in the country and RMI India’s report mentions empty running rates as high as 40%. Do your math and you will see how much these empty miles contribute to emissions.

Digital freight networks have the potential to eliminate a large fraction of these empty miles. With their ability - through cloud and apps - to reach the fingertips of truckers in India, these digitally enabled solutions present, in my opinion, one of the lowest hanging fruits for an early win in the fight to reduce carbon emissions from freight.
