Vedanta Aluminium is India’s largest producer of aluminium, manufacturing more than half of India’s aluminium.

The company recently announced the long-term sourcing of 380 MW of renewable energy for its aluminium smelters - 180 MW will be for the aluminium smelter at Jharsuguda, in Odisha, and 200 MW for the Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO) at Korba, in Chhattisgarh.

Once online, this project would reduce Vedanta Aluminium’s GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions by a massive 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually. To give you an idea, this is the equicalent of about 2 lakh households in India, or about 1 million people!

Once again highlights the importance of focussing on heavy emitters such as metals (especially steel and aluminium), chemicals/fertilizers and cement  companies for decarbonizing at scale.
