Getting green steel into homes - German home appliance firm Miele leads the way

Source : South China Morning Post

Notes by Narsi

A large percentage of GHG emissions happen from industrial activities - metal production, production of chemicals & fertilizers, etc.

Steel production is one of the largest industrial emitters of greenhouse gases, and the global - and Indian - steel industry has been keenly exploring all avenues for decarbonization. But steel is a hard to abate sector.

It is thus an interesting piece of news to know that "green steel" has started penetrating the consumer market, even if in a small way.

High-end German home appliance maker Miele has turned to low carbon “green steel” to decarbonise its supply chain, as it seeks to bolster the sustainability credentials of its products known for their durability.

The carbon dioxide generated by the green steel process used by the steel maker is around two-thirds lower than that of steel produced by conventional blast furnaces.
