Repowering aging wind farms - promise and challenges

Source : Mongabay

Notes by Narsi

India's wind power sector started sometime in the middle of the 1980s, so it's been over three decades. Many wind turbines are nearing their end of life. and it is thus an opportune time to consider alternatives.

One might think that repowering wind turbines (replacing old wind turbines nearing their end of life with newer, larger, and more efficient ones) were a no-brainer, but this analysis report succinctly provides the challenges associated with such an activity.

As the country races ahead to meet its renewable energy targets, in the context of old wind turbines, we are faced with one of the two options: Let them run for as long as possible; Replace them right away with newer wind turbines. But with lots of the old wind turbines being located in some of the best wind zones, the repowering option appears to be the sensible one if one were to get the wind power sector to contribute a lot more, faster.
