ArcelorMittal India plans giga-scale wind-solar with pumped hydro storage for 24/7 renewable energy

Notes by Narsi

This is really quite exciting.

A GW of solar / wind hybrid and backed by a large pumped hydro storage. And even this supplies only about 20% of the requirements of the Arcelor Mittal plant in Gujarat!

Should this really come to pass, many large manufacturing companies with massive energy requirements like that of Arcelor Mittal could follow this.

As hard to abate sectors such as the metals sector start to electrify, the key question in the future will be the availability of zero-carbon electricity 24/7. While the battery industry globally is trying to achieve grid-scale capacities at affordable costs, having an alternative such as pumped hydro - well known and well established for its capacity to store energy on a large scale - will be really useful.
