Solar Products Manufacturing and Sales

The off-grid Solar PV products sector, comprising solar lights, power packs and solar water pumps among others, provides excellent opportunities to Indian small and medium businesses. EAI can provide the critical and actionable intelligence for your company to explore and benefit from these opportunities.

According to estimates, about 60% of Indias population, mainly rural, either do not have access to grid-connected electricity or have very little access (say, 1 or 2 hours a day) to electricity. These people have to resort to subsidized kerosene or biomass like cow dung, wood and organic waste to light their homes and for generating heat for cooking purposes.
The result is

  • Enormous drain of taxpayers money in the form of subsidy for kerosene
  • Respiratory disorders caused by the smoke and fumes emitted when burning the kerosene and biomass
  • Long term damage to eyesight resulting from the poor illumination by the kerosene lamps.

The easiest and the sustainable solution for this problem is the decentralized and distributed power generation and consumption using solar PV and Solar Thermal products and systems.

The MNRE, realizing the potential for off-grid solar products, has set the following targets under the JNNSM.

  • Promote programmes for off grid applications, reaching 2000 MW by 2022.
  • Achieve 20 million sq. meters solar thermal collector area by 2022.
  • Deploy 20 million solar lighting systems for rural areas by 2022

Who can benefit:

  • Companies with a pre-existing good distribution network (E.g.: FMCG firms)
  • Companies who are already a part of the value chain
  • System integrators
  • Trading companies (import of inexpensive systems)

Strategic and financial benefits:

Since it is a fast growing market in its early stages, an entrant into it can potentially have the edge of being an early mover. Another benefit of entering the Solar PV products segment is the huge market size, being at the bottom of the pyramid. In addition to it, the limited competition in this segment is another strategic opportunity that a new entrant can leverage upon.

EAI's assistance in this area includes:

  1. Assessment of market potential for a new entrant in
    1. Off-grid solar power rooftop PV
    2. Solar products retailing in India (especially targeting the Bottom-of-the-Pyramid market).
      1. Solar lights street lights, home lights
      2. Solar PV water pumps
      3. Other innovative applications
    3. Solar Thermal applications
      1. Water HeaHeaters
      2. Industrial pre-heaters
      3. Solar Refrigeration
  2. Analysis of the Regulatory and Policy support from the government in the form of
    1. Capital subsidies
    2. Soft loans
  3. Evaluating the Investments and Returns in the off-grid solar products retailing sector.
  4. Doing a comparison between manufacturing and outsourcing of solar PV products.
  5. Devising the Marketing strategy and assistance in setting up distribution channels.
