Projects

The grid-interactive wind power as of March 2011 was merely 14989 MW. India stands fifth in terms of Wind energy production. Apart from central government’s initiatives, several State governments are coming up with their Renewable Energy policy that is pumping more projects. Foreign investments are also pouring into the Indian Wind Energy market. Some major MW sized solar projects in India are

 Master plans

Master plans are available for 97 potential sites for wind power in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. The master plans provide information on the availability of wind, land, grid availability, and accessibility to the site, which enables project promoters and state nodal agencies to undertake proper planning and implementation of the projects. The master plans have been provided to the state nodal agencies and are made available to project promoters, developers, and consultants through C-WET at a nominal cost.

Wind Monitoring Stations

MNRE has established 644 Monitoring Stations across 28 states and Union Territories of which 83 are in operation. 211 Stations have indicated Wind Power Density of more than 200W/sq.m. at 50 m hub-height. List of Monitoring Stations is available here.

Automatic Solar Radiation Monitoring Systems

MNRE initiated a major project on Solar Radiation Resource Assessment to assess and quantify Solar radiation along with weather parameters to develop a solar Atlas. C-WET based in Chennai installed a network of 51 Monitoring stations across India each consisting of two towers of height 1.5m and 6m. 1.5m tower houses Pyranometer and Pyrheliometer. 6m tall tower has rainfall, temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed assessing instruments. The projects are set up in- Rajasthan (12), Gujarat (11), Tamilnadu (7), Andhra Pradesh (6), Karnataka (5), Maharashtra (3), Madhya Pradesh (3); Jammu & Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Pondicherry (1 each). Monthly Average data from these stations is available for the year 2011 from May to November. Click here to access Solar Radiation the data.

Case Studies

Suzlon: Indian WEG manufacturer in World top ten
  • It is world’s sixth Wind turbine manufacturer, having presence across five continents- Asia, Europe, Australia, South and North America. And has reported over 5GW installed capacity in India

  • Utilizes Local resources for technology development: Aerodynamics in Netherlands, Product Engineering in Germany, Market in Europe, Asia, US; R&D and skilled manpower utilization in India.   Successful product portfolio for each experimented and type approved MNRE models.

  • Providing End to End Wind Energy Solutions: Infrastructure Development, Technology Development, Component Manufacturing, Project Construction, Execution, Operation and Maintenance.

  • Backward Integration done across various parts of world for suitable facilities: like- Turbine, Rotor blades and control systems in Daman and Pondicherry; Tubular Tower in Gandhidham and Dhule; Turbine and Rotor blades in USA and China; Gearbox in Belgium

Tamil Nadu: Leading WEG installations in India
  • Tamil Nadu started Wind Energy Development in 1990s and its successful wind energy status led to fast pace development in India. Now in India there are 186 Private Wind Farm developers

  • In 2008, state had installed capacity of 3856MW; generating 5270 million units annually with average capacity factor of 18.6%. Till September 2011, 68 Monitoring stations have been established

  • Constitutes more than 40% (5904 MW) of the total grid connected Wind Energy Installed capacity in India. Also, Wind is 27% of installed capacity in the state and 10% of generation.
